Taiwan: Savoring the tastes and views

Taiwan
As you can determine from the title, we spent quite a bit of time trying all the creative, authentic food we could, from this “food paradise” nicknamed island country. But amazing food is not the only thing that Taiwan is rich in. From Taichung City to Taipei, via the picturesque Sun Moon lake, we have truly enjoyed and experienced both the modern city landscape as well as serene nature and took in some breath-taking views along the way. In that spirit, this post will be a bit different, in a way that we are going to let the pictures do most of the “talking” for us. But don’t worry, we will offer short explanations and descriptions along the way! 🙂 Let’s jump right in!

Taichung City

Sherry’s hometown offered us a chance to really wander around on our own in all directions and find random spots to explore, such as:

Panorama shot of walkway between Museum of Natural Science and Botanical garden
Botanical Garden entrance
Taichung Confucius Temple
Cute shrine we stumbled upon while taking a walk in one of many of Taichung’s parks

Bustling Night Market street, which at night gets overtaken by delicious street food stalls!

Sun Moon lake

This truly wondrous retreat offers all sorts of activities for everybody. Beautiful nature, check! Bike trail around the lake and other outdoor hikes, check! Ancient temples and local natives shows, check! Cable car ride to mountaintop and amusement park, check! Great and affordable local food, check! By the end of our time here, our only regret was that we hadn’t booked more days…

This “Happy monkey” as we called him, marks the beginning of the hike through the forest of Mount Qinglong towards the peak and Buddha temple above. At the summit, once successfully completing the trek, you are greeted by a pair of elephants standing guard at the temple entrance. Also displayed is a huge map commemorating the pilgrimage of a revered monk whose remains are enshrined within. Behind the temple, shrouded in mists awaits giant statue of Buddha. Bottom right picture shows descendants of Taiwanese aborigines (or Thao, as they are called) performing their songs and dance.

Taipei

The capital of Taiwan with its modern vibe was our last stop on this trip. And as you can guess from featured pic on top of this post, after climbing the top of the 8th highest building in the world, the whole trip ended on a high! (Puns intended!) 🙂

National Palace Museum boasts the world’s largest collection of Chinese art and artifacts, around 655,000 pieces in all, some of them over 8000 years old!

Food

Not to skip the topic we started with, we’re going to do a full circle and finish with food! And on that note, we would also like to wish all our readers and friends, a plentiful and merry Christmas! Best holiday wishes from Mariners’ Journey!
